I like its color correction capability, very intuitive. It allows saving your image in whatever location you choose and several different formats in JPEG format, you can choose the compression level.ĭarkTable - A little simpler to use than Raw Therapee, not as many parameters/options to the functions that I've used. It's sharpening function is more subtle than the other two, and I haven't had as good luck with its color correction, but that's probably because I haven't taken time to really try all the options and learn what each one does. I've gotten good results by sticking to the defaults, especially with things like lightening shadowed areas. Raw Therapee - This seems to have the most flexibility of the three, with options that I haven't explored. There's demosaicing option in Darktable (0.9), there's micro contrast in Rawtherapee 3.1 (unstable), pseudo-tilt in Photivo. My main system is Linux and I've downloaded and used some functions in all the programs you mentioned for photo manipulation. It works very well for me.ĭue to rapid development of Darktable, Rawtherapee and Photivo, it's better to stick the newest versions. All in all I love Darktable and i will stay with it until a rather stable version of the rawtherapee 3 is out. Also i find that some settings are omitted in darktable you cannot choose what engine you will use for Unrawing your files which is really a shame.

It is a rather difficult question I will pdefinitely move to rawtherapee when 3.0 is out and stable until then Darktable does the job rather fine. Raw therapee has a better demosaicing engine at least in the alpha version and supports more cameras. You may also want to take a look at Photivo.ĭarktable manages better the raw files if the format is supported. I would suggest trying a fairly heavy luminance noise reduction (say, radius 2, edge tolerance 3000) and see if that works for you. I'm not sure how decreasing Clarity would work in that context, so maybe I'm understanding wrong. that the only feature I miss from LR :-(Īs I understand, increasing Clarity is a basic local contrast enhance which is essentially applying unsharp mask with very low radius and somewhat high amount, I use that as a sharpening step for print often. You are right, I give it negative values to soften the image, I've read somewhere that it affects de mid-lights contrast, but I haven't foudn precise info to know for sure. That's definitely something I would move to GIMP for to layer and use a mask, making the adjustment local. You may actually be able to emulate that with luminance noise reduction. But, I think it can only be a positive value, I guess you are dropping the Clarity to soften skin. In RT, the equivalent of Clarity is the Local Contrast adjustment. I use RawTherapee and have gotten fairly good results, but I'm an undemanding user, I do usually have to pull images into GIMP to get the best quality.

I didn't think there was a darktable release for Windows yet? I haven't set up Linux on my main computer so I haven't tried it out yet. Looking fordward to add more pics to the pool! PD: The one thing I didn't found (neither one nor the other) its the equivalent to the "Clarity" slider in Lightroom, I use it to soften the skins, moslty when I shoot models and stuff.

I think Darktable is way faster (e g when adding an effect or zooming) but kinda overloaded with options (this can be a pro rahter than a con) On the other side theres is Raw Therapee wich I've found more comfortable with, but slower than DT.

Luckily I've found two pieces of software wich I've found just great the are RAW THERAPY and DARKTABLE. I'm not new to photograph and either to open source but sadly I tend to work under windows with the Adobe CS Stuff related. L I'd like to say that I love the group, it's a great place to find some interesting stuff to read and of course.
